What Is It Like to Meet Joy Cowley? A Teacher-Blogger's Perspective

Posted by Lyssa Sahadevan on May 30, 2014 8:00:00 AM

For teachers and students, authors are like rock stars! They are celebrities we welcome into our classroom each day. We start and end our day with their works. We talk about them all the time and we try to be just like them! Authors are rock stars.

This explains my feelings as I stood in line to meet none other than Joy Cowley at the Hameray booth during the International Reading Association annual conference. I heard her speak that morning. She spoke so eloquently to the crowded room of teachers.

“I’ve always been a storyteller,” Cowley began. The author, illustrator, and literary hero of mine is also funny. “I’m glad I chose this path,” she went on to say. Sahadevan-7-1“If not, I’m afraid I’d been just a compulsive liar.” As you might imagine, we were hanging on every word!

Cowley said she was not a great reader as a young child. She started reading at age nine, and the first book she read by herself was Ping. She read it and then read it again, amazed at how it was the same story the second time! That is not how she became a writer though. She became a writer when her son’s teacher told her to write stories for him. Her left-brained son needed a little something extra as a reader. That’s how Mrs. Wishy-Washy was born!

Cowley spoke about her characters. She told us she works closely with her illustrators so every word and picture work together for meaning. She read aloud a Mrs. Wishy-Washy book. You could have heard a pin drop in the room! We were in awe. How humble and delightful she is. This author, word master, and creator of books that have helped so many children become readers shared stories with us like we were family.

Sahadevan-7-2Hours later, I stood in the long (and ever growing) line to meet her. I was practicing in my head what I was going to say to her. I thought I might start with “you’ve helped so many of my students become fluent readers.” Then I decided to go with “my cooperating teacher introduced me to your treasures thirteen years ago.” As I inched closer, I knew I had my first words: “I LOVE your books and so do my students.” YES! I was ready!

I approached the table, and she reached her hand out to greet me. All of my planning was out the window. I was a bit teary eyed. I told her it was an honor. I told her thank you for being so passionate about developing readers. Then she thanked me. She thanked me for being a teacher.

Joy Cowley is definitely a reading rock star, and I look forward to introducing my new class to her works in the fall!

The 4 Things We Learned at the 2013 International Reading Conference

Posted by Kevin Yuen on Apr 24, 2013 3:33:00 PM

The International Reading Association Conference in San Antonio this year may not have had the big attendance numbers of the best shows from yesteryear, but it was still a terrific opportunity for us to connect face-to-face with educators to discuss their classroom needs and to tell them about our new products (and some of the old favorites too!). We met teachers from all around the country and all over the world for that matter. For those of you who entered our raffle for a chance to win our newest series - Story World Real World - we've announced the winner below (read to the bottom)! First, here are the four things we learned at IRA:

1. Everybody
still loves Mrs. Wishy-Washy! Regardless of city, state or country, teachers everywhere unanimously expressed their great enthusiasm for the wonderful storytelling of Joy Cowley & her Mrs. Wishy-Washy brand of stories! It is always fun to see teachers who are as excited about Mrs. Wishy-Washy as their students must be. I can't tell you how many educators stopped by our booth just to take their photo with Mrs. Wishy-Washy like our very own Randy Padua did here:

Randy & Mrs Wishy Washy

Or, like Mrs. Wishy-Washy Fan, Kt, who posted this photo and message on our Facebook page:

Mrs. Wishy-Washy Facebook Post

2. Our newest series - Story World Real World - by Alan Trussell-Cullen was a hit! We received wonderful feedback about the uniqueness and timeliness of this series, which bridges traditional literature to informational texts. With most schools gearing up to address Common Core, Story World Real World offers an excellent way to meet the CCSS reading requirements for narrative and informational text by using traditional tales to introduce informational topics. Note: the series is available for pre-sale now and will ship in May!

3. The blood, sweat & tears were not in vain. It took us more than twelve hours from start to finish to assemble our 20 x 20 booth space, but in the end, it turned out to be one the best we have ever had. We have set the bar high for 2014 in New Orleans! Here are a few photos of the space:

4. It's better to give than receive. We had over 500 people enter the raffle for a chance to win a complete set of Story World Real World... (Learn more about the series here.)... and the winner is:

Kathy Spiel, ELA Coordinator from Apple Valley USD (Apple Valley, CA)

Congratulations to Kathy! We hope your students will love these books! For those of you who entered and did not win, we appreciate your visit to our booth and to thank you for your time, please claim a FREE SHIPPING code here (offer will expire 6/30).

We look forward to seeing you in New Orleans next year, or at a local conference near you! If there is anything we can do to be helpful, never hesitate to ask us! Thank you for being a part of the Hameray family!

Cheers,

Kevin Yuen
President
